2012 Review
18-12-2012
Same speil as last year, im not even going to read the previous
post! Parenthood = little time for tracking new releases and the
latest sweet underground band. I’ve just battered along and tired
to listen to new stuff where I’ve found it and stuck close to old

from start to finish, I always enjoy that challenge.

New Opposing Forces mix, this one blasts in under 30 minutes with
20 songs so you would be correct to assume that its a mostly punk
mix. We do have a dancy jazz spoken word breakdown in the midle
then finish strongly with so more face melting punk rock. Be
warned!

Another Opposing Forces battle with tonehead. He approached me
for this one, had the title and his opening track ready to go so for a
change tonehead has the opening track and sets the tone. And
some tone it is, this mix throwing enormous 70′s pop, 80′s cock
rock and a little pop at the end.

A while back I did a mix called departure for a friend who’s Da
had died. I was still thinking of that kind of song for a while,
and I guess songs about the end, desolation, death, wastelands.
That kind of cheery feeling we all have y’know? I asked tonehead
about some of his favourites and we got together with this mix.
Its a bit disjointed and I’m not in love with it, I dont think we
were singing from the same hymm sheet this day. But it has
some bits im fond of, mostly the middle section. It flows well
from The Damned to Sonic Youth. Anyway this is the soundtrack
to ‘the road’

Another team up with Senor tonehead. Songs about breaking the
Law – this one was always going to be easy.
We get off to a cryptic start with SMOG and Bill Callahan paints
enough of a picture to draw you in but always leaves room to ask
more. Thats definitely a skill of his. Who is the stranger and more
importantly, what the fuck did he do in the last town? Did he kill?
rape? Confidence scam? We dont know so your imagination runs
away with itself.. as will the stories in all the songs, enjoy!

Fattakin is joined in the foxhole by special guest star, Frankie
Sonicbottom. His Excellency Sonicbottom tells tales of his 40 years
in the Ska & Reggae world, his fights with Price Buster, taking U Roy
under his wing and how Lee Perry gave him his stage name.
Hopefully you enjoy his tales as much as I did. Frankie, it was an
honour having you over to Belfast and you are one of the last
standing legends of reggae. Have a smoke on me!

Finally got some time to sitdown with Brooks aka Tonehead.
We’ve done a lot of Opposing Forces mixes lately so I fancied
getting a few hours in front of the mixer and to play a load of old
Punk Vinyl. This is the results. Its actually pretty hardcore
listening back, we certainly played some clinker tunes! We had a
lot of craic and hope you get a few laughs and hear something
you maybe havent heard before. Enjoy as always.

Well, this year has been really hard to listen to new music due to
having a baby in Jan! Its been pretty flat out at home with little
time to indulge. I have the luxury of streaming grooveshark in
work but its been that kind of year where Ive fallen back on old
favourites to get through the working day. So the ‘new’ artists
aren’t as prevalent as some people but hey, its what pleases the
ears that matters right? Have a listen and hopefully one of the
artists will catch your attention and give you a wee lift!

WR: Departure
27-10-2011
This is a sadder affair than normal, a friends father died recently
and i was reminded of the days we used to play music in our
parents home and talk about the big releases like they were the
end of the world. Our paths were different at the time, he liked
Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd but we had common ground in Neil Young
and Ben Folds Five! I still remember the day he heard ‘the battle
of who could care less’ on the radio and taped it for me and
phoned me up all excited to let me know!
So a few days after the funeral i thought id try and capture the
essence of that time. Not really using old songs so much but
something he can stick on when feeling down and to work
through it. I’ve never really been a fan of having ‘uplifting’ music
when you are feeling down, i prefer to think it out, struggle
through and emerge on the other side. When i was younger i’d
listen to the Red House Painters when i had fights with my
girlfriend and felt at the bottom of the earth. Now i positively
love their morbid drone rock, it cheers me up thinking of how
stupid and emo I was then.
So this wee mix is for him, Ive burnt a CD and will post it up
tomorrow with a few other albums and hope it helps at this time.

apologies for sitting on this for so long. The
idea was to decamp to someones house with the gear
and record a show. In my idyllic, romantic mind i
pictured us supping the red wine and discussing
records and bands of our youth. Unfortunately the
reality was we clearly haven’t grown up, as we hit

So yeah the beers are in and the slobbering has begun. I like the way Brian summed up the live podcast as making a mix tape. Makes sense and pleases me. Its back, innit! Now I can face Dee Dortan! He’s really missed the live show and harassed me enough to do it again. So i got in contact with my longest standing indie vinyl buddy (no Offence lloyd!) Brian Russell and we got together one late summer afternoon to play some old records and talk shit. Thats your disclaimer right there folks. What esle to say – we debate the old stuff and some of the new. But this is a Vinyl only single take fuelled by beer and cigarettes!
We lost the first 15 mins due to a mistake by me, so this mix looses the gentle intro and gets stuck into the nosiy stuff, once you get past the trumans water racket it gets back to being listenable, I promise!

he 2nd Opposing Forces mix and one I’ve been looking forward to doing for a long time. Mr. Russell and I were close friends during the peak teenage years and shared records, recommendations and opinions for years. The man had the finest Vinyl collection in the town and introduced me to manys a band. We poured over sleeves, inserts & Melody Maker. Some bands we differed on as you’ll see but we always had Neil Young, Sonic Youth and Pavement between us. Times change and we haven’t seen each other in years but recently started song battles on weekend booze fuelled facebook chats. Already looking forward to the follow up!

I thought of this long before Zane Lowe but just got round to
doing it recently. The idea was to have a tenuous link between
songs, but overall have so kind of wandering mix trough my
music and someone else. Kind of trying to re-capture that idea
of 2 guys sitting over a bunch of Vinyl and playing tunes to
outdo each other. Brooks is a friend in work with class taste in
genres i normally only dip into and hence is great to talk to and
take recommendations from. I have another 2 on the boil with
mates that are shaping up to be excellent and hit me up in the
comments here or on facebook if you want to be number 4.
Yes i cannot find the hash key, this is the first mix done on my
first mac so im really finding my feet here.. you’ll hear the mac
volume button being pressed on this mix but as it was all ripped
from grooveshark in a live take, I couldn’t really face fixing it.
The Brief – I pick then you pick and we go back and forth until
we hit 12-14 songs.
Try and keep songs related, can be as simple as something in
the name of the band or the song title or member x went to
band Y or more appropriately, the music.. Similar sounds, this
band influenced that band….see where it goes.

So I’m off to the brother-in-laws on Saturday for a lads night. There will be a BBQ and copious amounts of beer. So I thought it was time to do a drinking mix that can be stuck on to get people fired up. I laughed when showcasing the tunes to my wife and she kept telling me not to include certain songs as we’d “go buck mental” to them. I saw this as a good sign and included them!

Weekly Rations: Vinyl Vault EP”

Therapy? – Meat Abstract
No one knows the trouble I’ve seen, no one knows my life…
FUCKIN TEENAGE ANTHEM! Drums, Blade runner sample and a hell of a lot of noise! I really really enjoyed the first few therapy EP’s. I remember being so impressed that such quality noise was coming out of ‘our wee country’. They managed to sound as good as any of the stuff from the states only they were from here, sounded like me and felt the same way. I know bands like Ash followed therapy? and had more success but they were just too lightweight for me. They didn’t sing about disillusionment, depression, books, society, Belfast like therapy did. With success they went a wee bit mainstream light metal but still delivered some good tunes. Still going strong and it was great to see them headline the Ulster Hall re-opening last year.
Fugazi – Burning Too
Again, Fugazi were a late teenage band that started educating me about music and social issues and how music can have something to say. Although I scorned their ‘straight edge’ lifestyle I was at least intelligent enough to take on board their view and learn from them. Definitely one of the truest punk bands
Mudhoney – If I Think
The sometimes overlooked grunge specialists this is from the first EP of their’s I heard, it sure has the characteristic quiet-loud-quiet loud grunge sound but it also delivers a nice slice of emotion and hurt. It’s actually quite a mature song for such a young band.
Sonic Youth – Dirty Boots (live)
Always remember this EP for the line Thurston says to the crowd:
‘what do you do if your mom gets a skinhead?….’
And some joker shouts :
‘fuck her!’
Classic.
This is a decent version of dirty boots, a song I kinda played out a bit, I think the production on the original suffered, this is actually much better J Lookout for a Vinyl Special of Sonic Youth as part of the LP Vaults!
Fugazi – Waiting Room
Classic bass line and classic tune, deadly live by the looks of youtube. It just puts across the frustration & aggression of being outside of the mainstream and fighting against. Again its social commentary that stands the test of time.
Therapy? – Potato Junkie
Little did I know that the guy that produced this would produce my wife’s band’s EP, Mudd Wallace is still going strong and has done a lot for NI bands. This starts as a nice bouncy poppy song then the dark & evil lyrics kick in. Imagine a crowd of thousands shouting the chorus back to the band at a sell out gig in the Ulster hall in the early 90′s. Ask Stevie Lloyd to tell the story of me falling thru the front doors in the face to get one of the free 100 7”. To his credit he asked for 2 and make sure I got one. Stevie answers it must be on video somewhere..
Minutemen – Take Our Test
Back before the internet, sometimes you simply read about bands, in music mags or papers. Sometimes you bough records based on reviews, sometimes you even bought because they were on the same label as ands you liked or labels you aspired to be into. Hey I was a poor teenager, I could have the SST back catalogue at my disposable. So here we are at minutemen, after reading about then a few times I saw this EP in Dr Roberts for £5 so took the plunge. It sounds like one of those rare bands that can survive 2 main songwriters! So many.. the lemonheads, the pixies, camera obscura, babyshambles, the libertines .. I could go on (Idea for a mix incoming, a song from each writer) They both take a side each which is a very neat solution.
Pavement – Shoot The Singer
I think this EP distills Pavement down to the core essentials and to be honest, I’m not sure if they topped it. Production is perfect, the tunes are really there, uplifting slightly nonsensical odes to … well its never really explained clearly, good luck finsing something to deichper in a pavement lyric but they manage to effortlessly tell a story? This EP is my favorite ever, hands down.
“slow it down, song is sacred” what a line
Kilgore Trout – disposable
You might remember this tune from Vinyl Vault 7” I think this is the original demo version of it. I just think it’s a beautiful catchy tune, really sweet. This version does go a bit mental at the end tho! I did reject a few more N Ireland artists ep’s for this mix as to be honest, the songs weren’t there.. but I do indeed love this one. ‘if it wasn’t for the cats id be long gone’
The Lemonheads – Ride With Me (acoustic)
This was my favorite lemonheads song for years and years… and probably still is. Not too much to say after the lemonheads overdose on the last mix. Basically Evan Dando is probably at his best when he plays acoustic
Beth Orton – Lean On Me
Beautiful tune, with Terry Callier. Very heartfelt and I guess typical of the kind of tune I like to end my mixes with, a gentle end, hopefully you are approaching your destination!

Weekly Rations Marathon: Rock
26-04-2010
A few weeks ago I got a request from the brother in law to do him a mix for the marathon he is running this week. No problem i thought, i’ll do two!!! A rock and a dance one. Both weighed in at 2 hours so after pruning most of the cheese out, I got both mixes down to 1 hour each. The worrying twist is that he isnt going to listen to them until the day of the marathon, so any dud tracks will stand out a mile!
Hellie kicks us off Mumford & sons kick us off with some tub thumping lyrics and catchy mandolin stylings! A bit weird you might thing but i think it gets you going into a classic Brucie power ballad. Billy Idol came from Dukster, maybe he recalls posing in the mirror in his leather jacket? Therapy & Faith no more with some stompers into Ram Jam to slow it down but get you singing along.. Bonnie Tyler & Boston for the Cheesy mid-section into the grooving of the doors, one of the brother-in-laws fav bands. Foo fighters to get us going again into Vampire weekend – actually going off this song a bit now so maybe it wasnt the best choice… then get the blood going again with some more upbeat thumpers that take us into the cheese at the end, from Transformers the Movie – Yeeeeeeoooooooooowww!

Brooks kicks us off with this progressive dancey disco funk, excellent builder – straight into the theme from scarface to get the spirits pumped. 3rd track is one that the brother-in-law tortured me with last time i was at his house, living in a box by living in a box from the album living in a box. Had to make an appearance! Then try and get more up to date and eventually into mr scruff – i love cycling and walking to this tune so figured it its bound to be good to run too!! The next 3 tunes are modern dancey numbers, hopefully they go down well, the ducks song always does! Then time to get more serious with leftfield, daft punk and roni size to lay down some serious beats and end on the upbeat ‘one more time’. Enjoy!

Weekly Rations: Vinyl Vault 12″
07-04-2010
Welcome to the 12inch mix! The Classic 3 track format, some see it as a waste of Vinyl, in some cases that’s definitely true. For lots of the bands I was into they ignored the chart rules of a maximum of 3 songs, so you’d get 4 songs or uncredited songs on the slab of vinyl. Usually better sound quality than 7″ pressings because of the heavier grade vinyl (compare a 7″ with 2 tracks to a 12″ with 2 tracks) Anyway I’m starting to bore myself! This mix is much more satisfying for me as I had ample choice, great A sides to play with and excellent B sides as well. Main thing I took from this is even on a crap 12″, you can usually find something you like. Although I do question some of the purchases that I found in the collection…quickly tossed aside when compiling this!

1. Belle & Sebastian – The State I Am In
From a run of incredible 12″ singles (Really more like EP’s as they went for the 4 track approach) This song has always struck a chord for me. Typical Stuart Murdoch tales of awkwardness, I love the way he always manages to capture a moment just as it passes. The songs have strong characters, strangely this song makes me picture the band as an Enid Blyton story, they are in the famous five, the mystery of… It’s probably autobiograpical as a lot of their early songs were. I think this is a re-recording of the Tigermilk LP version? I quite like the production, it has a live take feel.
2. Throwing Muses – Counting Backwards
Quite a harsh sound from this band, sometimes remind me of a more lyrically incisive Pixies, certainly a strong female lead band. Critically acclaimed but I don1t think they sold hugely well at the time? from the 4AD record label, the albums usually were well crafted proper ‘indie records’ I think this song is from after Tanya Donnelly left to form Belly, so it has that more clinical sound.
3. Sonic Youth – Starpower
Perfect sounding alternative tunings, booming bass and a steady drum, overlaid with Kim’s ‘is she bored or can she just not sing’ delivery, Starpower is an ear friendly single from the album EVOL. This was the first SY album I owned and played it and the follow up SISTER relentlessly. I can still remember buying them from the dearly missed Dr Roberts in Belfast. A great run of albums from this point, were they started to curtail some of the noise racket and use it that little bit more melodically
4. Dim Stars – The Plug
A side project for some of the Sonic Youth guys, this tune is the kind of punk tune I think everyone would like to write, fuzzy guitars, with stomping drum n bass. Their album of the time is slightly more musical. But this tune is a dirty garage punk rock special.
5. Pavement – Rattled By The Rush
Having always enjoyed critical acclaim and good sales for an indie band, they are back on the road for the much awaited comeback tour! Recorded during the “I was smoking too much weed” era you can hear the expansive nature of their recording. They moved on from the original ‘lo-fi’ through the college rock era of crooked rain to the more rounded, produced and experimental. The 2 albums after this one curtailed the smoking and produced well rounded numbers. I was listening to ‘Brighten the Corners’ in the car the other day, with my Sister in Law in the passenger seat, she asked me what the racket was and I simply told her, it was “What Indie music was like before you liked it!” referring to the types of stuff that gets called indie these days, anything with a guitar. Never shy of a great B side, most of the 12″ have a few clinkers on them but I thought I’d treat you to an A side for a change J
6. Dinosaur Jr. – Take a Run At The Sun
Up there with the classic American alternative bands of my youth, Dinosaur Jr are excellent because of the mixture of melody, harmony & feedback. J Masis, excellent on the guitar is also a one man band, stepping in on Bass and Drums during the times when he fired the band. Found of the solo, he also has that high pitched voice that appeals to me, like Morrissey. Maybe it1s because that’s the only way I can sing myself! Nice beach boys approach on this song, definitely accessible and feel good, what’s not to like?
7. Joy Division – Love Will Tear Us Apart
Killer opening riff, pounding drums and a stomping Peel session version. I like this more than the syrupy single version, more of a chance to hear Ian’s voice and I guess, feel the emotion while keeping the pogo pace. I can see myself to moshing to one of the saddest ever songs. Kudos to John Peel of course, his live sessions having brought out something special in almost every band that ever recorded for him.
8. Nirvana – Sliver
Recorded pre nevermind, in an hour1s studio time according to Wiki. It1s a perfect song template for Kurt, loud-quiet-loud-quiet while complaining about something mundane or un-necessary. The perfect slacker anti-hero, the forever teenager.
9. Sonic Youth – The Diamond Sea
Earlier I mentioned how Sonic Youth managed to control their experimental guitar mayhem, this is a prime example of it, epic soundscape feel to this song, soundtracky. It’s not really true that they gave it up tho, they continued to make mental sonic experiments but normally as side projects / artists. This is the edited version, sadly don’t have room for the album version but a dedicated SY Vinyl Vault will be forthcoming. It was a toss up between this and ‘expressway to yr skull’ I was happy to say for years that Sonic Youth were my favourite band and I owned everything up to Nurse but I haven’t listened to since, I guess when the catalog is so large
10. Pavement – Collin By Sound
An example of their ‘college rock’ sound. This bouncy B side does a good job of summing them up, Warm guitars, fuzzy vocals, spoken bits and lyrics that don’t mean too much, if anything! All a bit chaotic in a good way.
11. The Stone Roses – Here It Comes
Was always my Favourite Stone Roses B side as it didn’t have the ‘madchester’ dancey beat that the debut LP did, its more of an ‘indie slow song’ to me. Certainly as emotive as their stuff is, I suppose it sound more straightforward and it was their debut LP that came next where they found their feet. It1s a little heard song.
12. Screaming Trees – Peace In The Valley
Nice acoustic number from the man with the voice, Mark Lanegan. Very Johnny Cash delivery on this. The other tunes on this single do sound a little dated, but I wasn’t a huge fan of the Screaming Trees anyway, but do rate his voice. A nice way to end the mix I hope you agree!

OK, have to admit I’m not the fondest of this Mix, I didn’t really have enough 10″ worth talking about! So choice was limited. Plus my obvious urge to ignore the A side and track down the B sides left me ignoring the popular Lemonheads songs for some reason. Not really sure what was going on, all I know is I’m glad they are out of the way so I can get onto the good stuff and the 12″!! I did like the 10″ format, as they nearly always were 4 tracks for 2-3 and in the times you couldn’t afford an album, they were perfect. The lemonheads were always decent value.

1. Looper – The ballad of Ray Suzuki
Think this was a Jeepster records release, someone from Belle & Sebastian were involved I think. Indie Dance music, what’s not to like hahaha. A good bouncy bass and someone from Northern Ireland sampled, happy days!
2. Sonic Youth – Bull in the Heather
I’ve always been a fan of SY, from the old days right up to now, although some of the experimental stuff can be frustrating. The tuning are class tho, I love that side of the experimentation, whole guitars tuned to E and all that. This tune is quite poppy for them but I mostly enjoy the drumming and the tuning of the lead guitar, has that unique ‘chapel bells’ sound. Lol I just trademarked that.
3. The Lemonheads – Fade to Black
Metallica cover this, no matter what you say about Evan Dando, he is an excellent Acoustic guitar player.
4. The Lemonheads – learning the game (acoustic)
Nice little B side from this Single, its a Buddy Holly cover.
5. Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci – Miss Trudy
Ahhh more Gorkys. This is a great EP, the first 2 songs are firm favorites. Same style on Miss Trudy as Xylophones from Vinyl Vault 7. Buildup and quiet bits. Hey just like Nirvana! A story about his music teacher I think.
6. Sonic Youth – Personality Crisis
Its a kind of annoying song after a few listens this, but I still remember it, because the music is tripped back leaving a double vocal track from Kim.. does she go all Australian in the middle or is it just me? New York Dolls cover.
7. The Lemonheads – keep on loving you (live)
Reo Speedwagon cover. Sounds class the first few times you hear it, but grates after a while!
8. The Lemonheads – Its a shame about ray
Yep I did it, played the A side from one of the Lemonheads singles! Just one of the 10 classic catchy tunes of ‘Its a shame about Ray’ album. If you want to try the lemonheads, its the best place to start. And finish. lol I’m only joking, I’m a big fan, let me make you a mixtape/cd/mp3.
9. The Lemonheads – Rockin Stroll (live)
From the same EP, thought id include just to hear them rocking out a bit as I was sick of acoustic numbers at this stage of the ripping from vinyl!
10. Sonic Youth – Genetic
Tune has a scratch at the start so had to do a ‘fade in’ Not a bad tune, has nice legs at the end. Lee sings I think?
11. The Lemonheads – being around (acoustic)
Ah, a proper love song from Evan. This is a live favorite and one of his best. I think this version came along first and then was re-recorded electrified. Some really nice lines here and a warm, fuzzy song
12. The Lemonheads – big gay heart (demo)
Used to think it was a straightforward anti gay bashing song but it could just be about any relationship. Its still damm catchy!
13. Beth Orton – its not the spotlight
Beth’s first few albums were a breath of fresh air at the time, and most of her singles had something extra like this little gem. An interesting melody on the guitar and her strong vocals & words. What else ya need?

Well here it is, the latest Weekly Rations project, the Vinyl Vault!!!
I treated myself to a USB turntable late last year when I finished my attic conversion and finally set it up. I thought it was time to rip in some
choice tunes and mix them together, weekly Rations style
I have to admit , in the late 90′s I stopped buying Vinyl for a few reasons:
- Money – It was hard to feed the habit
on shitty min wage after University - Downloading – it was becoming easier to do, more choice
- Good shops closing – Dr Roberts in Belfast closed and the main source of goof music in Belfast dried up
- No turntable – living in student / post student houses I had no room and couldn’t move the kit about so much
- Dance music- I got into drum n bass type dance music and mostly bought DnB records for a few years
So it’s nice to have a turntable again and hope to start picking some stuff up, from ebay and the like. Until then I have decided to make 3 mixes, 7 inch, 12 inch and LP’s. (I may do a few different LP ones to be honest)
In this one, apologies for the levels on some songs! I’m only getting to grips with the recording. Plus some of them are pure lo-fi recordings / demos and there was nothing I could do to improve.
Tracklisting:
Sebadoh – beauty of the ride
Released around the peak of Sebadoh’s popularity, at least they had got over the worst of their lo-fi un-edited output! Lou Barlow could always craft a good pop song with well worded, romantic sentiments. Always seen as #2 to J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr, its great that they are back together and touring..
Tunic – Also Ran
Tunic remind me of university, they were the band that I thought could be as good as the big US indie stalwarts at the time. In this song the singing stands out for me, I guess because most of their other stuff was male led so I saw it as the Kim Deal / Breeders song… I have lost their LP but still have 2 7″ and an ep. I never met any of
the band but think they are gigging as skibunny these days. Nice uplifting song and reminds me of student Belfast, although it came out a year or 2 after I finished university, but you Don’t leave uni until you leave the Holylands
Pavement – So Stark (you’re a skyscraper)
I have always been a massive pavement fan, thanks to my mate Brian for getting me into them .,.. at the time I had more or less everything they release, including a lot of the rare early release. This comes from one of the singles off the first album and sounds like it was recoded in a separate session as it has a much better production than their first album and shows the direction they were moving in. Wont forget their only Belfast gig in the limelight, we watched them soundcheck for 3 songs, met them on the street after for a chat then went and had a carryout behind the billboards next to the building, awesome!
The Mountain Goats – Pure Gold
Trying to remember where I picked this 7″ up, I have a feeling it was the year in lived in
America. Its funny as I always loved this song but never really followed the band.. it was only when ripping it in that I realized I owned heretic pride album (and love it) but I had forgot that I originally loved them years before. I’ve been singing the chorus for days now…. Another lo-fi band that may need to check their output on occasion… sounds like they have embraced cleaner production
Liz Phair – California
Liz Phair always excited me as her music has a blatant sexuality, she is never afraid to tell it how it is, and how men are her playthings when it suits here.. I always shad a soft spot for this , the chorus again is lifting and the joke is funny.. well for the first few listens anyway
This comes from a double 7″ ep that had a few other good tunes on it too, but not quite as good as ‘fuck and run’ from her LP
Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci – if fingers were xylophones
Ah yes, time for the mentalist Gorky’s.. I’ve always had a soft spot for them, so cleanly produced and so much going on, layers of sound and melody.. then the change kicks in with the flute chorus and build up. Still gives me the shivers.. a truly inventive band and I admire the path they took, although occasionally too mental to really ‘enjoy’ I skipped the 6 minute sound collage that they released lol… maybe save that one
I love the slowed down finish to this song…
Eric’s Trip – hurt
Canada’s best known lo -fi band, this early released captures the whole lo-fi ethos, basement recordings, distortion, capture the song how it happened. They were one of my favorite bands at the time, probably because of the mix of experimentation, harmonies & noise. I thought I could be in a band like this.. if only I could play!
Nirvana – she said
It wouldn’t be fair to not include nirvana as they were all over the record collection at that time, although to be fair I quickly grew ‘out of’ nirvana and into Sonic Youth.. I liked this demo as it has none of the sheen of the final butch vig versions, sounds meaty, noisy.. like bleach or in utero.

Swervedriver – duel
Super Fuzzy Guitars.. loved this band for the Americana sound they had.. road trip music before I ever had a car.. Driving bass/drums? Reminds me of Doves now that I’m listening to it again.. I think this came from their 2nd album and the first was excellent too… no doubt I have a cassette copy of it somewhere
Dinosaur Jr – get me
Ah yes, this song used to crack my mate stevie up, he used to do the best slagging J Mascis
impression, he was the proverbial Belfast mettaler who would dip his toe into my indie world, as much as he liked dino jr, he always took the chance to take the piss out of me at carryouts in my house. Dino Yr seemed to sell well here in the UK, it was never too hard to get their stuff, I think they signed to island? Anyway this is a typical tune of theirs from the time, J Mascis crooning over a distorted guitar solo, sweet!
The Smiths – half a person
Quite a funky version of this tune, I don’t think this version is on any of the LP’s, not as far as I recollect. Masters of the 7″, iconographic sleeves and great b sides and songs not on LP’s… a completists dream!
St Etienne – sushi driver
(Sorry about levels on this one, seems quite loud) St Et were a guilty secret for me for a while, I never really knew anyone who liked them so I never advertised the fact that I did! I guess they seemed lightweight or mainstream and I was too cool for that, but Sara’s voice catches up with you, the right level or sugar and pain
Mercury Rev – motion pictures
A Neil Young cover from a B side.. I think I took a break from Mercury Rev for a while after Deserts Songs.. the classic “I’ve been into them from the start and now everyone else is” mentality childish to say the least… I think I finally hit maturity a few years ago so that shouldn’t happen again
But this is a lovely little cover, the way I like to end my mix’s!
What this compilation has done is make me want to track down more classic albums as, like everyone else I probably have half of them on c90 cassettes and its time to track some of them down.. off to torrents I go I guess!

Walk to Work: Autumn
07-11-2009
The Weather, the leaves, the changes in real life and the dark nights.. its all left me in quite the introspective mood, so its all slow, melodic stuff this time folks. Hellie disagreed and tried to get me to play the upbeat stuff but I just couldnt do it, its the season for thought gathering.
The colourful band supported Hellies band in edinburgh and I loved the set he played. Ian had the ability to play songs that, half way through I was convinced I already knew. They slipped right into my consciousness. On our way back from Scotland we played his EP about 6 times in a row. Love it.
Yonlu is a guy who posted on a gaming forum of mine, sadly took his own life at 17, left behind a body of work that is amazing. This is my favourite song of his.
Cat Malojian are good friends of ours and are a shining example of the Northern Ireland music scene, mucho respect!

Walk to Work: Winter
30-01-2009
Kicking off a fattakin special mix, I bring you.. Weekly Rations – Walk to Work: Winter! I got it in my head one day that I’d like a 30 min mix for walking, cycling, busing or even driving to work. I wanted something to capture the season, cold, desolate and emotional. I think I’ve done that, bar maybe the Sonic Youth track which I couldn’t get a decent version of, the production on Goo is muddy. So don’t be depressed, embrace the winter! It’s a time for red wine, central heating and listening to music. So if you are walking down the street, pop on Walk to Work and I’ll see you in the spring!

Weekly Rations 3
30-07-2007
Ok, here is WR3 which has been officially, up until now, unreleased! So welcome into your ears the fresh sounds of this podcast.
Listen to this offering and see whether you can tell why it was unreleased until now. Are the hosts just a bit too perfectionist, or was it the right choice to pull it until now? Either way you get what you expect now from WR, the great music, old and new, ‘intelligent’ banter and the usual smattering of feature segments.
Gixxer and dukster make an appearance to provide background ‘ambiance’! Listen to a quick review of Glasgowbury 2007, pimping The Delawares in the process. Hear Errol bitching about the dirge of new good bands and who his favourites are. Fattakin tells us of the time he saw Neil Young and met Scott Bakula in the same day! And Errol takes over Before They Were Famous!

Weekly Rations 2
21-07-2007
The return of Weekly Rations. The duo of Fattakin and Errol have honed their production values and produced a great sounding podcast this time around.
The template set out in WR1 has been improved and enhanced with the addition of a gig guide, reviewing some of the upcoming gigs, whether perceived to be good or bad!
Errol picks some tunes, which have been ‘cleverly’ planted by Fattakin. Blow Your Own Harp gets renamed to Blow Your Own Horn, which makes more sense anyway! Before They Were Famous makes another appearance, with Fattakin trying (but not succeeding) to inject some more Modest Mouse to the proceedings. And the question of the day is , ‘What song would you have played at the end of your buddy movie?’ This is also appended with, ‘Who would play you and your buddy?’ Some interesting, and good, replies give you food for thought.
So there’s your second dose of Weekly Rations. Sit back, relax and enjoy the mix of indie, rock, electronic and metal (Just to wash the electronic out of your ears!)
Length: 1h 3mins
